Every business owner knows running a business is tough. Every day, you’re juggling customers, cash flow, and staffing—and it seems something is always breaking!

To help ease the financial burden, Nova Scotia offers numerous funding programs. Keep in mind that not every program will fit every situation, but when the stars align, secured funding can make a massive difference.

Because program criteria are always changing, be sure to read the fine print and ask questions before applying. Also, make sure all your business tax returns (Corporate Income Tax, HST) are filed and your source deductions are up to date. Compliance is almost always a prerequisite for funding, and you don’t want administrative delays standing in your way.

Here are several funding programs I’ve worked with firsthand, ranging from staffing subsidies to equipment and expansion support:

1. Graduate to Opportunity (GTO)

  • Website: novascotia.ca/programs/graduate-to-opportunity
  • Focus: Hiring new graduates.
  • Overview: This program covers up to 25% of a graduate’s first-year salary and 12.5% of their second-year salary (with additional diversity top-ups available). The graduate must be employed in a permanent, full-time role to remain eligible.

2. Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Program

  • Website: nsapprenticeship.ca
  • Focus: Skilled trades hiring and training.
  • Overview: A fantastic program if you are hiring in the trades. The program officers are incredibly helpful and can guide you step-by-step through the application process and requirements.

3. Invest Nova Scotia

  • Website: investnovascotia.ca
  • Focus: Business growth and export development.
  • Overview: Invest Nova Scotia is a key resource for any business looking to expand beyond provincial borders. They offer grants, loans, incubators, and business intelligence services. I’ve had great experiences working with their staff. At a minimum, consider subscribing to their newsletter to stay updated on new programs.

4. Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ)

  • Website: canada.ca (Canada Summer Jobs)
  • Focus: Summer student employment (Federal).
  • Overview: This federal wage subsidy helps offset the cost of hiring summer students. Note that it is a highly competitive application process. Funding details (such as the total number of subsidized weeks) can change year to year, and approvals often arrive close to the start date. Ensure you have sufficient cash flow budgeted to cover wages while awaiting confirmation.

5. Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

  • Website: canada.ca (ACOA Programs)
  • Focus: Regional economic development, scaling, and capital expansion.
  • Overview: ACOA is the “Swiss Army knife” of funding in Atlantic Canada. They assist local businesses aiming to scale and compete globally. They frequently provide repayable loans to early-stage startups with high growth potential or established businesses investing in specialized equipment or facility expansions to drive national or international sales.

6. Efficiency Nova Scotia

  • Website: efficiencyns.ca (Small Business Energy Solutions)
  • Focus: Energy efficiency retrofits and upgrades.
  • Overview: If you plan to renovate a physical commercial location, check for available rebates or financing. Programs regularly support lighting upgrades, HVAC improvements, and building envelope retrofits. These incentives lower initial project costs while delivering long-term utility savings. Their advisors are great at identifying savings opportunities you might otherwise miss.

7. Workplace Innovation and Productivity Skills Incentive (WIPSI)

  • Website: novascotia.ca/programs/workplace-innovation-productivity-skills-incentive
  • Focus: Employee workforce upskilling and training.
  • Overview: WIPSI helps offset the cost of third-party training for existing employees to improve productivity or adopt new technologies. Pro tip: Application intakes typically open only during specific windows each year, so set a recurring calendar reminder to check their schedule!
